About Enamel Artwork

A vitreous enamel surface finish is achieved by fusing glass particles to metal by firing it at a temperature in excess of 800°C. Because of the properties within this fusion of materials the resulting artwork is not only an excellent vehicle for visual imagery and complimentary to modern design but is:

> Unique and contemporary.

> A format for a wide range of products over a range of scales, encompassing objects / artwork / sculpture / installations.

> Extremely durable / Long lasting.

> Practical and hardwearing.

> Hygienic and Clean - can be wiped down with bacterial sprays.

> Fade / UV resistant - colours are permanent

> Low maintenance - Graffiti can be removed using solvents.

> Heat / fire resistant up to 800°C.

> Tactile – will withstand being touched and handled in public spaces.

> Suitable for interior or exterior installation.

Smaller artworks are fired in my own workshop and are available as small individual pieces, which can be installed in single or multiple sets.

Medium sized artworks are also produced “in house” and are composed of sheets of fired enamels on metal that are pieced together to form larger pieces and are supported on wood panels.

Large scale enamels are produced on workshop visits to A J WELLS a leading manufacture of enamel products and signage, which is sited in the Isle of White.

Artworks are normally wall based, however it is also possible to create curved surfaces and three-dimensional forms i.e. columns / free standing pieces.

Enamel artworks are fired onto copper or steel. Steel is suited for large-scale pieces due to it's strength. Copper is generally used on smaller pieces and has additional characteristics within it's colour and surface range.

This piece is essentially a mark making study using scraffito techniques into liquid enamel.

The inspiration is taken from several images portraying urban marks, surfaces and areas of renewal.

Enamel on steel is hard wearing to all the elements. It is temperature resistant (up to 800°C) and chemical resistant with permanent colour stability. The finished enamelled product is easy to maintain, clean and hygienic meaning it can be used for many applications internally and externally.

The composite images are currently based on landmarks and areas of renovation in and around Liverpool. Regeneration in the city, constructional structures, and architectural details are all the focus of attention. This series is based on urban surfaces, the pattern/deterioration and textures on walls and pavings, the random marks of rebuilding, and gestures of graffiti.

Ruth Ball, designer enameller, utilises the fusion of glass on metal to produce a diverse collection of products, ranging in scale from contemporary enamelled jewellery and bespoke objects to larger wall based artworks. Pieces are made as “one-offs" or in small batches as limited editions.

Influences and inspiration for collections are unique responses to the many different facets of the world, and can vary from the exploration of architectural features, to diatoms & water, textiles, winter landscapes and seasonal changes, ... in fact anything that catches her eye.

The range of work Ruth undertakes includes ;

ENAMEL ARTWORKS

Designed and enamelled on a variety of scales these wall based enamels are suitable for a range of interiors, whether it be domestic, commercial or public in setting.

A piece could be the focus of a small space or the dramatic highlight of an entire wall.

CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY

Each collection is influenced by differing elements from season to season.

Ruth employs a variety of techniques and particularly enjoys using cloisonne, champleve and painted enamel methods.

Each piece is unique, from decorative bowls to ornamental vessels, Ruth is skilled in designing and making distinctive three dimensional objects.

TRAINING

Attended One Day Workshop with BSOE @ UWE Bristol - JUNE - The day included a tour of facilities and demonstration in printmaking, specifically the production of enamel water slide transfers, and the 3d printmaking resources. Additionally the large scale kiln was on show and in opperation. A bonus to the day was a viewing of the stunning display of Illustration and MA degree shows.

PRINTMAKING @ THE BLUECOAT 2008 - 2009 ongoing > As a process of self development I am attending courses in printmaking and hiring the excellent print facilities at the Bluecoat in Liverpool. Courses attended include:

CITY PANELS @ Design Show Liverpool.

I'm currently working on a series of panels based on urban areas. My influence is in observing a city at the point of change and regeneration.

As Liverpool celebrates it's capital of culture status for 2008, the city is a dynamic place to be. Forgotten corners carry a beauty born by age and worn veneer, embellished by graffiti and marks from a working past. Whilst the new builds proudly gleam with their mirrored exteriors that reach for the sky. It is this juxtaposition of old and new, that is an inspiration.

Current Collection - "Love & Kisses"

MATERIALS - Enamel on Copper with silver cloisonne wire and gold foil - Set into silver.

SIZE - Pendants are 42mm Diameter, suspended on 17cm diam rubber neck cord, with silver fitting.

STATEMENT
Jewellery has many roles. Often we consider jewels as something decorative or status driven. However, to me one of the main functions, that I find important, is the fact that jewellery has the power to embody a sentiment. A piece that can symbolise a meaning or represent the connections we have with each other, has more of an impact than anything else. Given with love and affection the effect is priceless.

The work for this collection is influenced by my familiar love of mark making. The idea behind the pieces are, that in modern scribble or text / email messaging between the ones we love, O symbolises Love or hugs, and X means a kiss!

In effect the pieces are contemporary but ornamental graphics. However, the pendants have that extra hidden meaning to the wearer that is not readily obvious, but essentially very significant.

The "Love & Kisses" collection was selected for
"HANDMADE IN LIVERPOOL" at the BLUECOAT DISPLAY CENTER
23rd November until the 5th of January 2008.

The collection is still available throughout the year at the Bluecoat Display Center.

Early days, but I'm currently working on a series of panels based on urban areas.

The ongoing building in areas of Liverpool, architectural details, and city life are a particular inspiration.

Panels are enamel on copper.The images are printed, painted and fused into the enamel.

In contrast to the Urban environment I've also been inspired by a recent trip to Finland.

A land which in these early months of the year are filled with snow and beautiful contrasts in the landscape.

I graduated from Middlesex University (formerly Polytechnic) in 1987 with a BA Hons in Jewellery Design. As a student I was awarded the RSA Bursary Award in 1985 and the Platinum Award in 1987.

Today I am an active member of the British Society of Enamellers, and also involved with my local group Merseyside Jewellers and Metal Artists Network.

I regularly exhibit my work both in national and international exhibitions. As a self-employed designer enameller, I am skilled in all aspects of champleve, cloisonné and painted enamel. In conjunction to producing my own designs, I undertake trade work, commissions, and I am an experienced teacher at Further & Higher Education levels.

> The Walker Gallery: In 2004 I worked with the Walker on an educational project and I am currently working on an assignment for them, designing and making a display of contemporary enamels for the Craft & Design gallery showcase. The title of my exhibition showcase is to be called GLASS METAL, FIRE reflecting the vital elements of enamelling practice. My work will be on show from 22 October 2009 - till late 2010.

2004 I was commissioned to write a “how to” book on enamelling for A&C Black, now finalized and published as of SEPTEMBER 2006
2002 I wrote a "how to" article for an online enamel magazine hosted by Allan Heywood Australia.
2002 My work was featured in " Enamelling on Precious Metals" by Jeanne Werge Hartley. Published by The Crowood Press
2001 The Walker Art Gallery Liverpool. I worked with the gallery, demonstrating enamel techniques and producing samples for exhibition display. Images are now on permanent video display in “Craft & Design”

2009 BSOE Bursary - Awarded for the study of Large Scale Enamels for public / private art installation.

1987 The Platinum Award
I won the section for innovative design and was also commended for commercial potential and standard of craftsmanship.

1985 The Royal Society Of Arts Bursary Award
I won a bursary award for travel. I used my bursary to visit Enamellers and Jewellers in Vienna. I was also awarded a prize of De Beers Diamonds.

STATMENT

Jewellery has many roles. Often we consider jewels as something decorative or status driven. However, to me one of the main functions, that I find important, is the fact that jewellery has the power to embody a sentiment.
A piece that can symbolise a meaning or represent the connections we have with each other, has more of an impact than anything else. Given with love and affection the effect is priceless.

The work for this collection is influenced by my familiar love of mark making. The idea behind the pieces are, that in modern scribble or text / email messaging between the ones we love, O symbolises Love or hugs, and X means a kiss!

In effect the pieces are contemporary but ornamental graphics. However, the pendants have that extra hidden meaning to the wearer that is not readily obvious, but essentially very significant.

The collection currenly is on show at

"HANDMADE IN LIVERPOOL" at the BLUECOAT DISPLAY CENTER from the 23rd November until the 5th of January 2008.

"Inspiration"
Design Initiative @ The Bleach House Gallery, Cumbria

This exhibition is to show, by means of exhibits from a range of Design Initiative members, the influences behind producing a piece of work.

My theme for this show is developed from the current fabric collection at Bleach House, and additionally the pieces for this exhibition also take influence from one of my early collections of paisley inspired jewels - I will be displaying a co-ordinated selection of jewels, bowls and panels.

I am a selected artist in the MJMAN satellite exhibition " 8 for 08 " which is on display at FACT Liverpool, commencing on the 20th of September.The exhibition coincides with the Liverpool Biennial and is a showcase of just eight selected pieces from eight makers.

Body & Soul figure 1 - sold

The panels are 10x10cm (mounted onto a wood frame 20x20cm)

This series is called "Body and Soul".

Panels are enamelled on copper, with opaque white over oxidized copper, fused into the surface is silver & copper wire / binding wire and gold leaf.

The pieces are varied in texture. The final flux over the figure is under fired, giving a subtle matting effect and a contrast to the gloss finish of the background. Additionally the gold leaf, dependant on the light, relfects a brightness which gives an added nuance to the work. The gold is fired to a fragmented state, and represents both the preciousness of life and the fragility of the human state.

The images are created spontaneously. I work freely, drawing with the wire to fashion the figure, attempting to create an impression rather than a likeness, capturing what I hope to be an expression or an emotive element to the work.

STATEMENT

Colour is the most alluring of all the design elements. We respond to colour more than line, shape, form or composition on an emotional gut level.

In this piece, 40/40 colour concepts, colour is explored within the two very different mediums of enamel and textile through rich contrasts, vibrant hues and textural surfaces.

40 pieces of enamel align with 40 pieces of fabricated textile. The square grid format is a vehicle for the juxtaposition of the two different surfaces, and is also a nodding reference to colour charts, embracing a full spectrum of colours.
The abstract imagery within each of the individual pieces is influenced by more personal responses to colour, evocative of the colours in nature colour moods of the landscape, and ephemeral memories of time and place. (The light over fields, the ripples in water, the golden hues of autumn etc.) The many combinations of colour unify each thought and concept, forming a piece which hopefully has gone beyond the process of it’s making, allowing the viewer to seek their own point of reference.

As the title suggests the inspiration for these pieces was water.....

Brooches :

The shape of the brooches are intended in size and scale to be like microscope slides. The images are detailed and jewel like. Each brooch represents a slice / a view of life forms that are supported by water in some way. Diatoms, plants and water itself are illustrated graphically using painted enamel and the photoetched champleve enamel method.

Panels :

The small panels are more specific in that they highlight the diatom shapes. I began to think of them as water jewels. Diatoms are incredibly fascinating. They are only visible through a microscope and are so tiny, but their structures and details are awesome. The techniques in the panels are more free form and painterly. Scrafitto, stenciling and sifting techniques are fused with painted enamel and the application of leaf and foils.

Paisley

These pieces were made from 1988 to 1990, leading on from previous works inspired by room interiors whereby images were developed from abstract studies of details. I took a particular interest in Paisley designs - they became a main theme in my work at that time. Each piece was created as a one-off, and a range of techniques were used. However, the main method was painted enamel. These particular pieces were repoussed to give shape and form, then enamelled. The larger works were riveted to back sections, and then engraved to add emphasis to the edge as part of the overall design and to give a finish to the piece.

Pieces are enamel on Silver and have 18k gold cloisonné wire details.

Contemporary Classics

Initially designed in 2000, the inspiration for this range was the contrast between the decorative and ornate paintings of Klimt and the simple geometry of the painted works of Mondrian. I took the influence of painters from early in the century to recreate these jewels for the new millennia.
The pieces have developed to become about the variety of pattern and application of contemporary surface design. This complementary range of pieces are purely decorative in concept - the pieces are repeatable, made to order and are very wearable.

These champlevé enamel pieces are made in silver and include 18k gold wire and precious stones.

Nature's Seasons Collection

This collection from 1998/9 was influenced by found natural forms in combination with colours that linked to the seasons. Pale blues and opalescence for Winter, rich golden hues for Autumn, and delicate mixed ranges of pinks for the petal-like colours of Spring and Summer. Abstracted heart shapes for Valentine's collections were also incorporated into the range. The pieces were made to order as a range of repeatable designs. The initial concept behind the range was that the natural form of something as simple as a petal or a leaf would become a jewel. Although each piece could be recreated no two pieces were made exactly the same. In nature, objects are the same, but for example, no two leaves would be identical if put together as the seasons colours change. An attempt was made to capture the essence of each season in a relative colour theme - in nature colours fade and change, but in enamel they are trapped - forever.

Techniques involved were champleve, cloisonné and painted enamel.

Pieces are enamelled on Silver and incorporate 18k gold cloisonné wires, gold foil and semi-precious beads.

The theme for this series of work is "Urban"

My "urban" pieces are intended to relate to the everyday, their inspiration is taken from random elements. Fleeting movements of people in their city environment, graffiti, patterns, marks on a pavement, etc ...

Made as prototypes, these pieces are developed as small colour experiments to expore a more free style approach to enamel. They are, in a way, wearable three dimensional sketches, which are part of a body of work that is still evolving .....

The pendants, enamelled in shades of white, tinged with pale blues, icy greens and subtle hints of earth brown, are highlighted with flashes of gold foil. They reflect an aerial perspective of a landscape in early winter.
